Virtue's Casualty

                                                              From birth
                                                             Toys and candy
                                                      Were the major concerns
                                     As were puppies, kittens, and earthworms
                                                       Even after a few years
                                                 Life was still relatively simple
                                                  Chasing dates and popularity
                                      Trying to scare away dreaded pimples
                                 Innocence, blissfully unaware of its own brevity
                                  Continuing the willful pursuit of youthful levity
                                     Stepping over the line means no return;
                                  Relationships bring with them inevitable maturity
                                     As well as sensations that can’t be unlearned…
                                                       The Self splits into two:
                                    Into Old:            (and)            Into New:

                                  It had been…                                          but
                                 Developing                                                        happened
                                 Slowly                                                                in an instant

                               Memories of                                                          The Old Self’s
                              naivety                                                                     now so distant

                Curiosity was growing                                                                     Wonder if New
                           feelings                                                                                     will miss it

     White roses, Badge of Virtue,                                                                 Painted Red
                         replaced                                                                         by the Crimson Tattoo

                                                                  (Worn proudly)

     Chastity                                                                                               The Mystery now
Will never come back                                                                                                           satisfied

Though a place of                                                                                                              Beauty,
Honor                                                        from experience;
It shall always have                                                                        a mark that can’t be
Internally                                                                                                                        Denied

Artist's Description

I wrote this as a piece of visual poetry, but since red bubble’s format doesn’t easily allow for such things, I may edit the spaces in this at a later date.

This poem is meant to be read several ways. Readers can read down each separated strip individually. They can read line by line. Then can read by correlating clusters of words.

The idea for the visual format comes from the line “the self splits into two: into old and into new.” It’s to show how a sudden event changes you, although the change happens slowly. And sometimes, you don’t realize the change until it has happened. And naturally, every change is complex and doesn’t leave you changed in just one way, but several. some are more subtle than others.

The content was inspired from personal events in my life; i.e. finding my first love and discovering how different I felt after I lost my virginity. I felt very much the same as I ever had, and yet I had to admit to myself that I had changed.

The visual form it took was inspired by the visual poetry masterpieces of the very talented Jenifer DeBellis. I discovered her unique style when we took a writing class together. This got me thinking that I could (and should) broaden my horizons in the realm of creative wordplay. So thanks to you, Jen! ;)
