Artist's Description

Situated on the South Ayrshire coast, Culzean Castle is located 12 miles south of Ayr and 4 miles west of Maybole, Scotland.

Built in stages between 1777 and 1792, Culzean is constructed as an L-plan castle by order of David Kennedy, 10th Earl of Cassilis.

The tower and wall structure in the foreground had no other function other than provide a frame through which visitors would first see the castle. I’d say it does that job quite well!

To avoid inheritance tax, the Kennedy family gave the castle and its grounds to the National Trust for Scotland in 1945. In doing so, they stipulated that the apartment at the top of the castle be given to General Dwight Eisenhower in recognition of his role as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe during the Second World War. Eisenhower first visited Culzean Castle in 1946 and stayed there four times, including once while President of the United States.

Culzean castle was featured in the “American’s in Scotland” episode of A&E Television’s landmark series, “America’s Castles” in the late 1990’s. I was the Director and Director of Photography for that show.
