Another in my series Modern Traditionalism.
I have grown up with a LOVE for feathers that I can’t deny. I believe it stems from my family “story” that my Grandfather was half Native American Indian. This was a time when stating you were Native American didn’t come with the pride or reputation that is does today. Having the name Youngblood, along with a drinking problem led to all kinds of speculations about my Grandfathers Indian heritage, which he denied to his grave. Over the years and through genealogy checks no records have been found which prove either way. My thought is with a name like that, I must have some Native blood in there somewhere. Because of this family legend, I have always been intrigued with the Native American and especially the beauty I see in their dress. I started collecting masks years ago and have wanted to do a series of Warriors for a long time. This is my interpretation of traditional looking head dress and face paint, created on modern/abstract looking heads. I try to incorporate re-purposed things in all my art, and have succeeded with these also. My materials are fiberglass, acrylics, foam packaging, leather, sinew, seed beads, turkey, hen, goose feathers, aluminum, and yarn.
