Artist's Description


Red Clover-Trifolium pratense, is from the Pea Family. This plant is reddish purple and round-headed. The leaves have three leaflets and are marked with a v-shape.

This plant is a favorite for pollinating by bumble bees. “If the whole genus of bumblebees became extinct, the red clover would become very rare.”

This clover is useful in improving soil fertilization. It is also cultivated as hay for forage. The red clover is the state flower of Vermont.
