As a young man, Michaeel was one of the few survivors of Babi Yar Massacre, in Ukraine. When the residents of his village were ordered to gather their belongings and documents, rounded up and led out of town, he realized, as he was marching along with his whole family, that he had forgotten his papers. Because they weren’t too far out of town yet, his mother told him to run back and get them. By the time he was able to catch up with his family and the rest of the villagers, the massacre had already begun. Consequently, he joined a local Partisan Group to fight the Nazis. He later immigrated to US, and I had an amazing privilege of meeting him, while working on The Greatest Generation Foundation project in Denver. On this Memorial Day, I feel that we should not only honor those who had perished, but also those who had fought and survived!!!
