Fire Writer 2/3
By Darren Bailey LRPS

As my mind continues to create the fire intensifies and things begin to take form……..

Piece created using a Nikon D90 and a Nikkor 50mm f1.4

Also used

A 1920’s typewriter
Methylated Spirit
Manfrotto LED lighting panels
My hand

How this piece was created

The typewriter was set up on a pasting table under which I will place a layer of soil , I use this as it it easy to make it turn almost invisible with the use of camera settings and software colour tweeks and as I use fire in my works fabric is out of the question!
Once set up the LED lighting panels are placed for optimum lighting conditions for the effect I am looking to achieve a number of test shots are taken to optimise angle before further test shots to optimise camera settings, once all this is done it it time to prepare.
A bucket full of cold water it placed directly below the shooting area for me to plunge my hand into to put myself out!
The camera is set to self timer on a 10 second delay , I then press the shutter button and spray my hand liberally with methylated spirit place my hand on the typewriter with a BBQ lighter in the other hand ready to ignite, as the camera begins shooting on my chosen settings I ignite my hand.
After approximately 4-6 seconds things start to get a little too warm and it is at this time I plunge my hand into the awaiting bucket of cold water.
