BRUSHES #1 in ABUSE Series

I gave away my water paints,
But I didn’t give my brushes away.
I’ve had some of my brushes since 1963, starting high school, Art Major.
I used them in college: Humanities Major (covers eveything humans do and think.)

I used them until my second husband said I was too dumb to paint.
He didn’t know—it didn’t show—neither the pain nor the Art.
Four years we were together. But with one devil gone,
I just found a worse one. And one worse still.

I got away from them, but they weren’t the problem—
The problem was in my thinking, and it’s called co-dependency.
It’s like Cinderella’s step-sisters cutting off parts of their feet
To fit in the dainty glass slipper.

Only it wasn’t my foot, it was my heart and soul,
And it wasn’t a slipper I was trying to fit into,
But the small hearts of small men..
So for a time, because I expected it of me,

I believed that I wasn’t an Artist.
MAN! Were all of us wrong!
P.S.:: I’m well, now.

I haven’t written about this subject at all. Talked some, but haven’t written about it. It’s time, and RB is the place. -=DS

Artist's Description

This is how & why I convinced myself that I wasn’t an Artist.
BRUSHES is part of my in-the-works series on ABUSE.
It’s time to talk about this kind of denial/abuse, and this is a pertinent start.
