Goddamned Brilliant

The sky was Goddamned brilliant that day,
azure and infinite.
You held my hand
as we waded through
waves of golden grasses.
The sky was so damned brilliant that day,
every cloud bleached white from the sun,
and we laughed so loud
at how our feet
barely touched the ground.
The sky was Goddamned brilliant that day,
each leaf an emerald prism
glinting in your eyes.
You held my face
in your sure hands
and spoke of love
across my sanguine lips.
To the left
the hills
blazed orange
with fire,
burning hotter than the sun,
and I called your name
as our fingertips parted,
my voice carried away
on the breeze.
In the distance
time beckoned to you,
thick and greedy
and black,
but I will never forget the way
the sky was Goddamned brilliant that day.
