Artist's Description

One of the most exciting dives of my life was spent following a school of several hundred barracuda, each a little over 1m long. At the start of the dive they were hanging, barely moving in a ball. As we watched, the ball started to revolve, faster and faster. As it got faster, it started to elongate upwards and downards. Within five minutes, the ball had turned into a rapidly spinning tornado, its base down on the reef, its top almost at the water surface, 15m above. The tornado continued for about five minutes, whirling ever faster, until the school flattened out and the fish moved on, leaving my buddies and I wide-eyed with excitement. Maratua Island, Indonesia.
