Artist's Description

I got a call when Lara was out riding this afternoon. I was expecting that she had a puncture or a mechanical issue with her bike but instead she excitedly told me that there was an echidna ambling around the edge of the road. I got there as soon as I could, hoping he would not be scared off into the bush.

Luckily he was more preoccupied eating an ants nest, and could barely be bothered with a photographer in front of him. It is very rare to see an echidna anywhere, let alone around here. I remember as a child even the one at the zoo was always hiding. Each time I see one I am somehow encouraged. If an echidna can survive unharmed in Manly, it must not be as overbuilt and and polluted as it sometimes seems.

In the few minutes I spent with him, several cars stopped to have a look. For some children it was the first time they had ever seen one, I hope they will be as encouraged as me.
