Artist's Description

This was taken after the St Patrick’s Day service at – naturally – St Patrick’s Cathedral, here in Melbourne.

This is Archbishop Denis Hart, and my interest in the crozier was actually whetted during his homily, when he mentioned that his crozier bore many ancient Gaelic symbols.

After the Mass, I noticed the Archbishop surrounded by many groups of schoolchildren, each of which wanted a photograph with him. Despite the crowd of eager students on either side of him, I simply had to face the challenge and try to get a shot of the Archbishop in profile, with the main emphasis on that historic crozier.

It was NOT an easy shot, let me tell you. I reckon I must have fired off about a dozen frames before I shot this.

If you know the significance of any of the symbols, do let me know!
