Artist's Description

Yes, it’s not one but two recognisable symbols of the city that never sleeps!

This shot of the Empire State Building atop a New York subway street lamp was taken in a warm summer night in late June 2010.

We were on the way back to our hotel and I had taken a few shots of the landmark building against the night sky when I was suddenly struck by an idea. Could I find an angle that would give me the distinctive two-tone lamp in the foreground and the skyscraper in the background?

Given that I never use a tripod when I shoot, it was an interesting challenge. In this case I used depth of field to keep the building in the sharpest possible focus, while proving the soft-focus lamp as the ``anchor’’ of the image. Just for the record, the lamp was outside Bryant Park subway station.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F5.6, 1/45 sec, ISO 800, focal length 125mm.

Featured in YELLOW TWO, March 2011.

Featured in AS IS, April 2011.
