Artist's Description

This bird of paradise flower showed such perfect symmetry that I had to stop and get out my camera immediately. I was in a very crowded public area, so I had to choose my angle really carefully.

Did I shoot this because of the contrast between the orange and the purple? Not entirely. Did I shoot this because of the sunlight reflecting off the golden sap? Not entirely. I shot it so that it would be a total contrast, both in shape and colour, to the architectural landmark behind it.

Yes, it is the Sydney Opera House.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F11, 1/500 sec, ISO 200, focal length 98mm.

Featured in ONE SINGLE FLOWER ON SHOW, October 2010.
