Artist's Description

This shot was taken in 2007, while I was photographing two Rolls-Royce Phantoms in a Melbourne showroom. I’ve used extreme depth of field to render the famous “Spirit of Ecstasy” as a series of light halos.

There is no digital manipulation here, just simple use of soft focus. I had shot half a dozen images of the world’s most famous hood ornament and then, just on a whim, asked the staff if they could open the hood for me, so that I could try and get a shot of the ornament with the engine bay in the background.

The Spirit of Ecstasy (an angel-like figure of a woman with arms outstretched) was designed by Charles Robinson Sykes and has been a standard Rolls-Royce feature for 99 years. When I was shooting this series, the overhead lights in the showroom were causing a lot of reflection on the shiny metal – and by shooting this after moving the focus ring on my lens, I was able to turn that disadvantage into a rare shot of the classic symbol.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens. F4.5, 1/20 sec, ISO 800, focal length 58mm.
