Artist's Description

What could this be? Any theories? You can leave as many comments/ guesses as you want.

If you don’t want to see the answer, don’t read any further!

Solved on the seventh guess by Jemma who correctly identified this as fireworks. It was shot at the New Year’s Eve fireworks by the Yarra 11 months ago.

I alternated between using a Sigma 18-125mm lens and a Sigma 70-300mm lens. Obviously, it was a lot harder with the longer lens, because there is a lot of guesswork involved in capturing fireworks. Midway through the display I locked the lens at 300mm and decided I would spend a couple of minutes trying to get this type of halo image.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D. using a Sigma 70-300mm lens. F5.6, 1/45 sec, ISO 800, focal length 300mm.

Featured in MELBOURNE AND VICTORIA, December 2009.
