Artist's Description

Did you notice the helicopter hovering in midair?

I was a long way behind this US Navy F-18 Hornet, because it was cordoned off at the Australian International Air Show in 2007. But that forced me to think of a way to compose the shot by thinking outside the square. Luckily I am well over six foot, so I was able to shoot over the heads of the onlookers milling around.

By concentrating on the great paintwork and the unusual Oriental-style typography on the control surfaces, I was able to frame this really tight, using an 18-125mm lens. This allowed me to use the complementary colour of the covers on the engine nacelles as well.

I do not crop, enhance or post-edit my images in any way. Shot with a Pentax K100D, using a Sigma 18-125mm lens.
