Artist's Description

The image shows The Howitzer (Helm Crag summit) and Dunmail Raise.

Wainwright’s Central Fells guide book published in 1958 states Helm Crag’s height as 1,299ft but the OS 1:25,000 map now records 405m (1,328ft).

The rocks at the northwest end of the summit ridge are the high point of the fell.

These rocks are known as either ‘The Howitzer’, ‘The Lion Couchant’ or ‘The Old Woman Playing the Organ’, they can not be seen from Grasmere village.

The rocks at the southeast end of the summit ridge are called ‘The Lion and The Lamb’, these are the rocks that can be seen from Grasmere village.

EOS 1D MkIII, 17-40mm (L)
