Artist's Description

The Silver Y (Autographa gamma) is a medium sized migratory moth, resident in parts of North Africa and the Mediterranean, migrating as far north as Greenland. The Silver Y flies both during the day and at night, and can often be seen feeding from flowers around dusk.

It is named for the marking on its wings, which looks like the latin letter Y or the Greek letter γ.

The Silver Y larvae feed on low growing plants, including crops, and so can be considered a pest by farmers.
