Desert Sunflower, Geraea canescens, Asteraceae, (Sunflower Family)

Photographed in the Saguaro National Park above Tucson, AZ USA
Olympus E-3, Sigma 105mm f/2.8 macro, 1/200 Sec, f/8, ISO 100

These radiant flowers bloom on stems 30 to 60cm high hovering over coarsely hairy grayish green leaves found mostly around the base. Multiple rays are 2-3cm long and shallowly toothed at ends. Each disk flower in center head is enfolded by a scale. The plants flower October – June from southeastern California to southwestern Utah and Arizona.
