Artist's Description

Although I haven’t been able to identify this wildflower with 100% certainty, it appears to be a mega-version of the Fendler’s Desert Dandelion, Malacothrix fendleri, Asteraceae (Sunflower family). It started out as a normal 30cm high dandelion but has since risen to more than a meter in height and produced numerous 25mm blooms. The seeds are carried by fluffy white spheres which float gleefully on the wind – obviously intent on taking over the desert.

Photographed in Hermosillo, Sonora México; Olympus E-3, Sigma 105mm macro f/7.1 @ 1/10, ISO 100
