Artist's Description

Arizona Poppy, kallstroemia grandiflora, Caltrop Family

These beautiful, low growing summer flowers create a stunning ground cover along roads and fields from southern California to western Texas and northwestern México at elevations of 1000’ to 5000’ above sea level.

Individual bowl-shapped blossoms are comprised of 5 yellowish-orange fan shaped petals tapering to bright maroon centers on 2" to 4" stems. Leaves are dark green opposite, pinnately compound with 4 to 8 pairs of elliptical leaflets 1/3" to 1" in length.

They are often confused with the California Poppy and are also known as the Desert Poppy, Mexican Poppy and Summer Poppy.

Photographed on the Catalina Highway in the Coronado National Forest above Tucson, AZ.
Olympus E-3, 50-200mm lens at 200mm, 1/3200, f/3.5, ISO 100
