Artist's Description

The Flame Azalea, (Rhododendron calendulaceum)

Flame azalea flowers are 4 to 5 cm wide with a 5 lobed tubular corolla, 5 stamens and a bright crimson style with grayish-green stigma. The leaves are 5-10 cm long ovate and dark green and glossy when mature. The shrubs grow to a hight of 5 meters or more in dry forests and fields and are often cultivated as an ornamental shrub. They grow wild along the eastern USA from New York down to Georgia and flower during the months of May and June.
