Artist's Description

Gray Beardtongue, Penstemon canescens – Figwort family

2-2.5 cm long tubular, 2 lipped flowers with 5 stamens including one hairy, infertile one which lays across the lower lip like a tongue. The petals are pink to violet purple with darker purple lines inside the corolla. The 6 to 15 cm long leaves are ovate-lanceolate with upper leaves opposite and clasping and lower leaves stalked and broad. Stems are round and downy and stand from 16 to 40 cm high.

The Gray Beardtongue can be found in dry woods, thickets and roadsides May through July around the mid-eastern region of the USA.
