Artist's Description

Red bloom of the Northern, or Purple, Pitcher Plant – Sarracenia purpurea

These carnivorous plants grow in bogs and forest wetlands and consist of one large nodding bulb-shaped flower stemming from a circle of pitcher-like leaves spread out below. The pitchers fill with rainwater, and insects drawn to the edge fall into the water. They are then digested by the plant through secreted enzymes and bacterial activity.

The plants appear May through August along the eastern region of North America from Newfoundland down to Florida and as far west as Louisiana. They range in hight from 12 to 50 cm. The 5 to 10 cm diameter flowers open up in the form of an umbrella with 5 sepals, 5 petals and numerous stamens.

I took this photograph at Smithgall Woods State Park in White County, Georgia.

Olympus E-3 w/ Zuiko 35 mm f/3.5 macro; f/8 @ 1/30 sec, ISO 100.
