Artist's Description

Gay Wings, or Polygala paucifolia, of the Milkwort Family are tiny bluish purple wildflowers and orchid look-a-likes that grow in moist forests from low to middle elevations throughout the appalachian mountains. The plants grow from 2 to 6 inches tall with flowers that range from 3/4 to 1 inch in length. They are characterized by two sepals in the form of wings and three petals wrapped into a tube.

Gay Wings are fairly rare and often hard to find because they grow so low to the ground. Their soft color, hot pink in this case, and tiny size make them very difficult to photograph.

I took this photo in early April along the trails at Tallulah Falls state park in Tallulah Falls, GA USA.

Olympus E-3 and Sigma 105 mm macro lens.
