Artist's Description

The Multiflora Rose, or Rosa multiflora.

This magnificent bush, or large shrub, grows wild along the eastern to central regions of the US from Florida to Canada in fields, forests and roadsides. The flowers blossom as early as late April and continue through the summer making way for red hips that last into the winter and provide a useful source of food for wildlife.

The 3/4 to 1.5" grouped blooms consist of 5 sepals, 5 lanceolate, heart-shaped petals, five stamens and numerous pistils. Pinnately compound leaves grow alternately with a smooth upper surface and a pale, velvety textured underside. The plant’s thorn covered stems can reach as high as 15 feet and form wonderfully dense habitats for small wildlife.

The multiflora rosa spreads so abundantly that it is considered an invasive species in several US states.

Late afternoon photograph taken along a wooded creek in Dunwoody, GA (Suburb of Atlanta).
