Memories

The rocking chair creaked slowly, back and forth, a rising and falling pitch that kept time with the tapping of her foot. A thin plume of smoke drifted from the end of the cigarette, held lazily in her fingers as her hand draped over the arm of the chair. She stared out vacantly at the city on the skyline, high rise towers and smoke stacks vying for space, a permanent gloom clinging fiercely to the low ground between. Slowly she raised her hand to her lips and inhaled deeply, eyes scanning the horizon. Not so long ago it had been just that; the plains disappearing into the distance, only to be subsumed by the sky. Now though the horizon line was blurred and obstructed by civilization. It was encroaching faster all the time. In a corner of her absent mind she knew that the city would one day encroach even upon her. The white-picket fence would be supplanted by chain links, the neatly kept lawn buried beneath concrete, and her house, with its white-shuttered windows and screened in porch, would be removed, without a trace even to show she’d been there. She smiled wryly. She at least, wouldn’t be around to see it. Her last memories would be of birds singing in the boughs of the trees, the scent of freshly cut grass, a splash of colour as a butterfly flitted past, the dappled sunlight sweeping over her face as she rocked, back and forth. But then, what would remain when she was gone? Would there be anywhere left for the city to grow, or would it blink out as she did? As she perished from the universe, so too would all who depended on her. She coughed. A wracking cough that broke the rhythm of the rocking chair as she doubled over. She coughed until the tears streamed down her face and then, gasping, she leaned back and looked at her cigarette. She smiled again, only this time the smile reached her eyes before she closed them and took another drag.

The rocking chair resumed its chorus, and a thin plume of smoke drifted back and forth between the light and shadow.
