I heard the news today

The television crackles to life,
the grey suited man staring at me.
Emotionless he sits as he reads someone else’s words.

He tells me a story about a boy,
he is dying and no one can help.
He tells me a story about a bomb and the people it has killed.

He tells me the story of a drunk driver,
who has killed a young couple driving home.
He tells me about the baby they have left behind.

He tells me a story about a soldier,
he was shot by his friends and lies dying.
He tells me a story about the bravery of a dead man.

He tells me the story of a celebrity,
they have died at the age of thirty.
He tells me the story of children who do not have.

He tells me stories about genocide,
ethnic cleansing, racial profiling, sexual abuse.
He tells me of an old lady beaten in her home for money.

He tells me a story…

A static buzz and then silence,
the screen turns black and is still.
Thank god they were just stories…
