Artist's Description

Unlike many of Hill End’s early miners who left the town once they’d made their fortunes, Louis Beyers remained in Hill End to enrich the village with his generous civic projects and his services as mayor for many years.

There can be few better examples of the working class dwellings which formed such a feature of Hill End during the boom than Beyers Cottage. Originally constructed by Louis Beyers in the 1860s, the cottage was home to several generations of Hill End residents through into the years following World War II.

Today the cottage has been adapted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service for interpretive purposes and you are welcome to stroll in and have a look around the grounds.
