Artist's Description

A Class T Locomotive at the Sulphide St Train Stn Museum on Blende St Broken Hill.

S.A.R (South Australian Railway), Class T Locomotive No. T181.
L.E. Roberts.
Built by James Martin and Co.Ltd Gawler. This locomotive commenced service on 7th July 1904 and operated continuously on the Peterborough division of the South Australian Railways.

It was the last steam locomotive to work regular scheduled passenger train in South Australia and was the last steam locomotive to bring a train from Peterborough to Broken Hill on 9th January 1970. It was named L.E. Roberts in honour of the Manager of Silverton Tramway Co. Ltd for this last trip. Jan 2015 Broken Hill became Australia’s first National Heritage listed city.
