A Caged Life

My home I know far too well
After seventeen years it feels like Hell
The same cabinets, walls, floors and halls
Everything shifting and yet not at all.
With nothing changing but my age
I feel as if I am caged.

Many near me support me and try
Showing me freedom they make me cry.
Forcing myself to get away
My conscience tells me another day.
Life seems simple and fun
But my chores will never be done.

Hatred has built up inside
Friends and family from me they hide.
Gun to my head I pull the trigger
Reaching for a life that’s so much bigger.
Attempting to fly and having no wings
To a wall my voice is heard as I sing.

Seeing life as a game I want to play,
The controller is constantly dragged away.
My heart breaks when I see them leave
Looking down at my friends with a bloody sleeve.
I hold them dear and close to me
Reaching through the bars I have no key.

Away from me I push them further
Only wanting them to come closer.
Thoughts of suicide cross my mind
Wiping away my existence from mankind.
I try to help myself by blocking out the world
But find others’ problems at me hurled.

The door opens to a new beginning
Life becomes a blur, my mind spinning.
So hard I try to fit in,
Finding all I do is a sin.
The cage has grown and so have I
Nothing is changing, I might as well die.

Things are looking up now,
I know not why nor how.
People have changed, confusing me
…holding me?
Lightness has intruded into this dark world I see.
Thought and meaning spread to all
In suits and ties they line the hall.

I can now view the world freely
One full of love and laughter ideally.
But something is wrong
This is not a world where I belong.
The love, the hate, the pain…
In the cage I remain.
