At Midnight, I Dream Wide Awake

I wait until the midnight hour before
moving slowly through my house
Late night music of dance plays in my mind
and like many I hope it never leaves

I’ve dreamt of soft shoe shuffle,
of tap, of pirouette and jive

My steps are silent as I wear no shoes
The tiles wear socks like skates on ice
I look out through the window to make
sure no one is looking in, then move to
close the curtains for I know that I
cannot look at my own reflection

I use a kitchen bench to steady the body
like dance students use the rail
but there is no elegance at this age
My time has passed, but I think that I was never
there to live it, no matter what the year
It was never the manly thing to do

I start to move my uncoordinated arms
wishing to be a gentle weeping willow tree
yet only succeed in moving like a
graceless dying gum tree in a storm
My body twists and turns, I convince myself
that it moves in time to the music in my mind

My feet move to the beat of Jelly Roll Morton
and His Red Hot Peppers – give me Dr Jazz
Inhibitions disappear as I tap and pirouette
my way around my half lit midnight kitchen
But do not take for me an aging fool
for I know the dance is only in my mind

I’ve dreamt of soft shoe shuffle,
of tap, of pirouette and jive

The midnight hour comes and goes as I
move slowly down my darkened hallway
The music of dance still playing in my mind
At midnight, I dream wide awake

At Midnight, I Dream Wide Awake
