Artist's Description

World’s oldest living Limber Pine. Recent measurements have established the age of this tree in central Alberta in The Rockies to be close to 3,000 years, making it by far the oldest of it’s species in the world. I’m currently working on a book about this tree to be released next year. This image was recorded with the Sigma DP3 Merrill, a total of 60 shots with the GigaPan. File is 128 megapixels.
This tree has a girth of 108" around the main trunk and 185" around the lower trunk. Ring counts taken in 1986 by researchers from a 10cm core, counted 400 rings, or approximately 100 per inch. Some of the limbs have a girth of more than 96" and the longest roots snake their way through the sand and rock towards the North Saskatchewan River for more than 60 feet. The tree is about 30 feet high.
