The Curiosity of Failure

He was smaller than everyone and couldn’t sink a ball like Alfred or Neil but showed up to every practice, feet planted center court

The team were live bouncers around his underhand, overhead, sideswipe of the basketball traveling every possible arc ‘til something worked

Alfred told him to give up and Neil said try things he was good at because if he netted, it was just luck shoving it in with a heavy hand

When we lost the big game, Alfred quit ‘cause it was stupid, Neil got quiet but the small kid played on squaring the net, fire in his eye

He was not the ball, he was not the game, but he wanted to see if he could master it and while he never really did he was pleased he tried
