Yes I’m very pissed off
This artwork was attacked last night after it was linked to a very unsavory shirt that was thankfully taken down.
A few people left remarks I thought weren’t warranted because it was all taken out of context which the person who did the link (we’ll call him Dr Zaius) probably anticipated, I won’t call him smart just devious. (any 3 year old learns to manipulate)
The shirt that was taken down was getting a lot of people angry (myself included) I think it was done also because the person who did the link was the only person to give the shirt’s author a positive comment (you people really should read the threads before you go ballistic).
I thought I’d wait to see what the reaction would be.
Firstly, this is a piece of satire and it pains me that I have to explain it.
It has been up for a year and was recently put back up to view after someone requested it. Dr Zaius must have had a hard time finding it. It also begs the question if he had such a problem with it, why didn’t he mention the 1000 other times we’ve conversed?
A bit of background:
This picture is from a comic my brother and I did in the early 80s, my brother is the author (this is one of the few pieces of art not belonging to me in my profile). We grew up in a low income housing commission area where what they used to call in the pub those days “Wife correction” before it was correctly called by it’s proper name :
“ wife beating “ then “violence against women”.
Many of our friends would often sit and tells us they wished “Dad would leave Mum alone” and many wanted to get bigger so they could beat their Dads up or leave home.
We were lucky My Mum and Dad adored each other and though Dad had problem’s he never raised a hand to Mum, to us yes. Mum: NO.
This comic was to show that domestic violence comes in all income groups and levels of respectability.
THAT WAS THE POINT.
NOW THE IMPORTANT BIT.
This picture hung for nearly 2 years in the Small Café at Monash Uni in from either 1984 or 1985 with the writing:
No matter what your income
No matter what your creed
No matter what your Race
If he beats you
GO TO THE POLICE
Don’t hind behind the punches
SAY NO to domestic violence.
Or something similar, it was for the Anti Violence to Women Group
We called them the prevention of cruelty to Mum’s group
It may or may not have appeared in an issue of Lot’s Wife in an article about domestic violence. I do not have any copies of the paper or the poster, hopefully one will turn up.
It’s obvious Dr Zeus doesn’t understand satire because the only piece I’ve ever seen him do was an over the top homophobic piece thinly veiled as a terrorist Mag and on the cover was a picture of someone (him?) with a semi erect penis.
It didn’t last long due to the howls of protest.
SO he has no right to judge work on my profile.
His issue wasn’t with the art work it was with me, something that has festered for a while and this is third time he has tried to bring my name into disrepute.
So ape boy you were proved wrong again so go back to masturbating in front of the mirror to your sexy poetry and stay 5the fuck out of my profile.
For someone who thinks my work is shit, you spend a lot of time looking at it.

Good on you Danny….
You go Danny. This is a brilliant work, no doubting why it was used 20 years ago before the current focus on domestic violence. And I find it so hard to understand HOW ANYONE could misunderstand the intent here!!!
Fair enough. But in fairness to those of us who did have negative things to say.The image we were linked to was without description, and we weren’t to know any of this.
Sorry.
The good Dr, may owe you an apology on this.
owe a few people i would say.what are the chances do you think?
I’m so glad you have posted this….. the story is great and really makes the image come alive with its proper history attached to it…… good one ….. and in the context of your personal narrative that comes with this image….. it becomes…once more…. a very powerful and postitive statement…..
This is shit you have had to explain yourself Danny, but when situations arise at times you do sometimes have to do so, and it really has given this a monumental context… but for the record there is no explaination required to me, i trust you and your judgement.
danny this is a great peice.
it warrants attention & i love that it hung in a gallery in the 80’s mentioning not to be afraid of speaking out on domestic violence (no matter what your background!!).
im glad you put it back up.
My profound apologies-sorry.
that’s cool
Well said. Don’t know what all the fuss is. Too much violence everwhere. Any violence anywhere…..
