Artist's Description

The Century Theatre was located at 14 Mary Street and was built in 1913. Originally named The Lyric Theatre, this 2300-seat motion-picture house was converted to Hamilton’s first movie studio in 1920, and again renovated in 1922 as a movie theatre.

In 1940, the theatre was modernized, and renamed the Century. Another modernization in 1952 did little to save the Century, and it closed in 1989. Later, the facade of the building was designated to be of heritage value by the City of Hamilton. But nothing could stop Hamilton’s appetite for new condo development, and it was recently torn down.

This photo was taken in 2009. It was rendered in HDR from 3 exposures and post-processed in Lightroom and Photoshop.
