Around South Australia, colonies of the Little Blue Penguins are in decline. One of the few colonies known to be stable (2006) is on the small in-shore Lipson Island Conservation Park adjacent to Lipson Cove. Regardless of the colony's importance to the future of the species, Centrex Metals intends to build a bulk commodities port a kilometre away, chiefly to export iron ore from Eyre Peninsula to China for steel-making.
