Artist's Description

In early August of 2011 the worst was feared for the breeding population of Giant Australian Cuttlefish in the Upper Spencer Gulf. Estimates of numbers were way down, and were later confirmed to have dropped from 250,000 animals in 2010 to just 25,000 animals in 2011. This was one of the few animals I sighted and photographed on this recent visit, demonstrating a classic weed mimicry defense. This photograph was taken while producing the documentary film Cuttlefish Country scheduled for release in late 2011.
