We Never Noticed

The cats started crying, pushing and shoving around the window this afternoon, “We smell something different in the air.” They were saying. The squirrels were picking up pecans faster than we could. They were hiding them in holes all over the yard. Birds we had not noticed before were hanging around the bird feeder. What is it? There’s a chill in the air.

The roses in the garden were still blooming, as the leaves on the trees were falling. The smell of steaks cooking was replaced by the smell of leaves burning. What is it? Fall is in the air! A northern breeze whispered through the trees, stirring my soul! Summers heat had left me drained, “Get out and play…breath deep and enjoy!” What is it? Cold weather coming in!

I don’t mind that the stores are full of the sights and sounds of Christmas in July.
October hails in Halloween which is a joyous time for me; as it’s a time to celebrate all things “Cat” and my child-like spirit soars with thoughts of costumes, candy and being “scared to death” by old movies of “The Wolf man”, “The Mummy”, “Dracula” and who among us doesn’t love the master, “Alfred Hitchcock”.

By November, Thanksgiving, and visions of sugar plums take a momentary back seat to cranberry sauce, the smell of a fabulous turkey or ham and the joyous gathering together with family and friends to give thanks for another year of life and to remember those we’ve loved and lost.

The day after Thanksgiving if the five day forecast indicates rain then Thanksgiving quickly gets lost in mounds of white lights and orange and green extension cords. What is it? It’s hard to imagine; but it’s Christmas!
A rush to beat Mother Nature’s cold, or rain and capture five more minutes to complete the light display across the yard. What is it? “Tis the Season!”

“Tis the season” that began when the cats started crying; a season that began when the squirrels hustled to steal pecans from our hands and bury them in places only they would recall. It’s the season that began without so many ever noticing; long before the red feathers of a cardinal stood out more against the backdrop of falls colorful leaves, or winters first snow. It’s the season when the hustle and bustle of an entire year catches us off guard and we rush to make amends for neglecting family and friends in a few short weeks.

In the last few weeks before winter….the cats will scurry to pack on fat, and like us they will survive.
The squirrels will scurry as well and hopefully they too will survive. But their journey into the new season did not catch them unaware.
The birds? Well, the cardinal was always there too; we may not have slowed down enough during the spring and summer to really notice; allowing ourselves time to admire their sense of timing and beauty…

Happy Fall Everyone!
