Waking the Giants

I remember thinking, I’ll like having a giant for a friend.
He rose from the earth while I was planting sweet corn. Luckily he came up out of the lawn, not the vegetable patch, or I’d have been very annoyed.

Clods of dirt fell from him as he looked down from his eye-level, higher than my rooftop. My clothes line was squeaking in protest from its new skewed angle, and the wasteland that was my lawn was going to take months to get back into order.

He didn’t do anything but stood there, looking at me. I guessed he wasn’t wanting to squash me, or he’d have done it, so I broke the awkward silence.
‘Hi,’ I said. ‘Help you with something?’

He dropped down to one knee, the impact thumping through the ground, and I heard a tree branch fall somewhere behind me. He leant his earthen face towards me, and I could see the detailed movements in his face, like an animated sculpture.
‘Where is my forest?’ he said, and his voice was slow and rumbled inside me.
‘What forest?’
‘I spread a forest to cover me as I slept, but now my forest is gone. Now I am awake, and I wonder what this thing is that replaces it.’
He pointed at my house, so I explained that it was where I lived. That people lived in all of the houses for as far as we could see.

He didn’t reply, so I wondered what he was going to do next. He could stay here in the backyard, I thought, as long as he was careful to avoid my paving. I’d only finished the thought when he began to sink away back into the soil. He didn’t disappear, but stopped once his face was immersed, and then a muffled roar bellowed out from the ground.

When the land stopped trembling he stood up again. ‘What did you do?’ I asked.
‘I woke up the others. It is time the giants walked the Earth again.’
I smiled and said, ‘So you’re not leaving?’
‘No. I will not be the one leaving.’

Yep, I thought, I sure will enjoy having a giant for a friend.
