A Friend Lost

She was a rider
Thundering across the fields
Balanced upon a beast of white
Until the distance was too great
And an old friend was forgotten

She was a fighter
Wrestling with the guys
Hanging with the hoods
Afraid of nothing at all
Until invincible became vulnerable

She had a wild side
Anything goes was the game of the day
Unpredictable and lively
Until calls of obnoxious rang in her ears
And the ocean waves became still

She was a bubble of laughter
Caught in a world full of humor
With happiness everywhere she turned
Until the heart of laughter was gone
And the soul forgot where to look

She was a sister
Spilled of the same blood and tears
A friend to the end
Until friends were forgotten
And blood began to run dry

She was an eagle
Perched high above the world
Feeling the wind on her face
Until a ceiling was put in place
And she was locked in her cage

She was loner
Content in her own space
With nothing but her thoughts
And the quite of solitude to keep her company
Until her thoughts became still

She was a writer
Flooding paper with words
Inward facing emotions turned outward
Until the outside became the inside
And the river was dammed

She was a friend
Always willing to lend an ear
A warm shoulder available to all
Until she needed a shoulder
And found herself frozen in ice

She was a taker
And brought others for the ride
Until she became a giver
Finding her all was not enough
And passion was lost

She was a friend worth knowing
But she died along the way
Flowers cast in the wind
Tears dried and long forgotten
Until only a shadow of her remained

You saw the ghost of her
And you helped me see
She’s not dead and forgotten,
Simply resting inside of me
Calling out to be turned free

I rediscovered the friend in me
Thundering across the plains
With the wind on her face
And the sun on her back
Confident that she is here to stay

Artist's Description

After being thrown a few curve balls in life, some of my closest friends encouraged me to start writting and reconnecting with myself. This piece marks the beginning of that journey.
