Maple's Yellow

Summer has lasted summer’s due
and now I feel it pack its things
in the fog of cool mornings
the harvest flavors’ gathered dew-

August surely winds away
as twilight ever falls more soon
more scope has now the patient moon
and summer’s said all there is to say.

Orion, look toward me! Polaris, keep still!
That I may keep my bearings, the season moves through
the color on the berry is new,
there is longing even in the songbird’s trill.

On leaf-dappled grass would I happily gaze,
past yellow leaves, to the deep blue sky-
Toward the south, honking geese are passing by,
and summer’s said all there is to say.
