Kingscliff, Australia

Hi / My home is in the beautiful Tweed Coast of Northern NSW, Australia.. / The beach is my “back yard” & I feel so...

Coastal Walks on the Tweed Coast

The Tweed Coast in Far Northern NSW is brilliant spot for Coastal walking ..From the northern tip of the NSW border all of the coastal villages are joined with shared walking & cycling tracks .The walking tracks pass through seaside villages ,magnificent headlands & river walks .
Alternatively , you can walk the beaches , joining up with the walking trails to cross over a number of coastal creeks & those magnificent headlands ..Apart from enjoying the coastal scenery , there is also historical & cultural significant sites along the way .
For this walk , we start at Fingal Head , were the trail takes you over the first headland. On the headland , there is a historical Lighthouse – (originally a kerosene lamp on a light pole ! ) . The new Lighthouse was built in 1878 making it the oldest existing public building in the Tweed Shire..Fingal Head is also famous for the basalt columns which where formed after volcanic activity from Tweed Volcano , nearly 23 million years ago . This basalt column structure is called the Giant’s Causeway , named after the famous Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, because of the similarities .

The headland is also a popular place for whale watching , as these awesome sea creatures pass by for both the northern migration & then the return with their calves for the southern migration .. Cook Island , just off the mainland here , is a marine reserve – a safe haven for various aquatic migrating birds & abundant marine life , such as turtles , giant groupers & leopard sharks to name a few .
From the Headland , you can take the river walk along the beautiful Tweed River down to Chinderah – a historic river village that was one of the first areas settled in this region . Chinderah was once a thriving river port , especially for the sugar cane industry .There are plenty of shady spots to stop & take in the views of this beautiful river . From Chinderah you can follow the walking path on to Kingscliff ..
Kingscliff is a vibrant seaside village with interesting shops & plenty of places for a well deserved morning tea or lunch break ! . The beach is a safe patrolled beach , popular for swimming , surfing & fishing .Cudgen Headland at the end of the beach has a crystal clear tidal creek , safe for swimming .From here the walking trail takes you over the creek & onto the next coastal village -But that’s for another day :))
Now for the walk back ! ..For me the best way to walk back to Fingal is straight up the beach !..Dreamtime beach is approximately 6lkms & is a leisurely beach walk right back to Fingal Head .
This walk is approx. 14klms round trip so you will need plenty of time ( because there is so much to see ! ) , a reasonable level of walking fitness, good comfortable walking shoes , hat , sunscreen , water & of course your camera ! ..PS – don’t forget your swimmers , just in case you want to go for a refreshing dip on Dreamtime Beach !
