Artist's Description

This is the HMAS “Castlemaine” which is permanently moored at Gem Pier in Williamstown.
.
HMAS Castlemaine, named for the city of Castlemaine, Victoria, was one of 60 Bathurst class corvettes constructed during World War II, and one of 36 initially manned and commissioned solely by the Royal Australian Navy.
Construction started: February 17, 1941
Launched: August 7, 1941
.
Williamstown is a very old town across the bay from Melbourne, and
was the location for the docking of the HMS “Nelson” when she brought
my G.G. Grandparents out from England in the early 1860’s…
.
If you look closely, you can just see the Melbourne Wheel across the bay in the Melbourne Skyline, on the right of the image…..
