Art Detour weekend, four places to find my work

Art Detour is an annual event in Phoenix, Arizona. It happens this year on Friday March 17 through Sunday March 19.

Image: Mutant Desert, acrylic on plywood, 48 × 48 in., available from the Phoenix Center for the Arts, Mural Sale, March 18 or online.

Besides the Mural Sale, I’ll have several ‘Thrift Store Makeovers’ at the Icehouse gallery, a few miniatures at {9} The Gallery, and some small pieces at the Artery.

Early Spring 2017

“Cooties” in progress; studio work table, early 2017. Cooties is mixed media on paper, and has since been mounted and sealed onto a rigid panel, so it won’t need to be under glass.

I have been getting back into making over thrift store reprints, and even some political themed art, and you may be seeing that pop up at shows this year.

You may also see the usual stream of new miniatures using collage of my own doodles combined with words or headlines from the newspaper. I can’t explain what process drives the doodles; it’s very subconscious and so is the choosing of newspaper words to cut out. It is almost meditative to get out piles of old drawings and news clipping words and pair them up. People seem to find very personal meanings in them which delights me.

Shows in Nov and Dec

My blog is the best place to read details, just wanted to put it here, too, that I have work in two galleries this winter. BLOG

The first is the Herberger at Arizona Center. (Not to be confused with their other gallery across the street at the Theater Center!) Located at 3rd St. and E. Van Buren, Phoenix AZ. I had a chicken painting in this gallery in Oct/Nov, and just replaced it with a Hummingbird painting. This is part of photographer couple Archie and Connie Tucker’s invitation to paint from their photos in the Derivatives exhibit. Hummingbird, (really original title, I know!) will be up until mid Dec.

The other is in {9} The Gallery where I’ve shown frequently and had a solo show in Sept. Besides a few small works left from my solo show that are still available there in the Lounge, I

Fatal Farm Sep 16-28

Packing work for my solo show, Fatal Farm, today! We shall see if we can do it in one car load. It opens this Friday at 6 pm-9pm. The piece in this image, (which links to my blog if you click it), was inspired by the many broiler chickens bred to grow to unhealthy sizes very quickly, and slaughtered at a few weeks of age while still babies despite their size. I could easily do a whole show again on this theme, and if it keeps going as I make new work in the next year or two, I just might do a sequel! There were many issues of the factory farm industry and of pets, etc, that I simply didn’t get to but are in my stack of jotted down ideas and sketches. I’ll have quite a few pieces in the show but the topic could easily go on for some time.…

Two shows in Sept

These are the show ads for both my solo show the last couple weeks of Sept, and the 2 person show with Carlos Rausch thru most of Sept. I’ll update with more when it’s closer to the dates. Hope you can come if you’re in the area!

For locations and hours:

Olney Gallery at Trinity Cathedral

The Gallery

UPDATE: The opening at Olney went very well! Their crew did a great job of hanging the show, and there was a good steady crowd at the reception. I sold two pieces and had interest in some others. The show will be up until Sept 28. We take it down the 29th, not sure of the time yet, so better to assume it’s the 28th!

I’ve been busy getting things ready to deliver to 9 The Gallery, and that show will likely be up until Sept 24 which is a Saturday. I am not sure when we take it down but it’ll

Progress & Update

New blog post about my methods for preparing canvases and panels to paint on, and roughing out the composition of a painting in progress. Just click the photo to go to the blog.

Show update: My October solo show at {9} The Gallery was penciled in for October but was moved up to Friday, Sept 16th! Until the schedule is set in stone and shows announced I will still say, watch this space for updates! Olney gallery opening reception is still Friday, Sept 2nd. Sept will be a really busy month. The painting in progress in the above photo is for the show at {9}.

Summer and Fall Shows

This is a good kind of busy! I have shows lined up for June, August, Sept, and October. All the shows are in Arizona.…

JUNE

Details about the June show at {9} The Gallery are on my blog The group show is titled Gods & Monsters. It promises to be a lot of fun! [Update, one of the pieces in this show, “Deep,” has sold!]

AUGUST
[Update, Aug show has been postphoned, no details on when it’ll be at this time, but probably not til 2017!]

I have not yet blogged about the Westgate gallery show in Glendale, AZ, that was going to be in August, because I know almost no details at this time. When it happens, it’ll be with another local artist, Christy Puetz who makes fantastic beaded animals. There may be a third artist as well. I expect to have several pieces in this show which is animal themed.

Upcoming Shows, 2016

Though it’s not written in stone, (subject to a gallery changing dates of things for some reason), I will be showing at Olney Gallery in Phoenix AZ in Sept, and {9} The Gallery, also in Phoenix, in Oct. Both will be ‘big’ shows, one a 2 person show, the other most likely a solo show. In between now and then I’m doing group shows that I have time for. One for sure is the Mutant Pinata show in Phoenix, (Chartreuse Gallery), in March. There are others that I feel I’d be nuts not to participate in, one about monsters for example.…

You can see up to date posts about shows and events I’m taking part in on my Wordpress Blog

Because of the two shows being a few months off, I want to keep most of my work off the internet so it’ll be ‘fresh’ when shown. I did this last year and to some extent the ye

“I Am Not A Toy!”
Mixed media soft sculpture
Approx. 9 in. high by 15 in. wide at widest tentacle tip to tentacle tip

This sewn fabric creature was actually started some years ago, along with a few others. They got boxed during one of our moves, and I just recently uncovered them again. There was a toy themed art show coming up, and I knew I didn’t really have time to start anything from scratch, so I finished one of the creatures. The eye is glass, possibly made for use in mannequins as it’s quite realistic. After sewing I stained it a little then sanded it lightly to give it a nice soft feel. The circular marks, lips etc, are painted on. The others, now that they’re out of
