Their Unvoiced Question

Yelling, screaming, a kick to the side or a hard cuff to the ear. Being hurled into the yard on the pouring rain, freezing snow. The big eyes look up, full of unshed tears and hurt. Betrayal, one they can’t understand, when the tender hand that caresses them suddenly bruises them. They don’t speak as we do, but they feel as we do. Why they would ask, if they could. Why? I only love you. I trust you. My friend, I am here for support, for love. That’s all I need. A little love. What did I do wrong? Those big eyes, full of unshed tears, now lying empty, as their bodies, spirits and hearts are broken. Later, too late for some, someone will see the marks, the hurt, the anguish. But sometimes, they will see these marks on the empty shell, faithful pet no longer, now merely discarded like trash. Sitting outside, petting my best friend, my dog, I hear them. Why? Were we not good enough for them? I still love them. Voices, unheard, loving their abusers, always asking Why?
