Australian Soldier 1914-1918 War

Yes! I’m a soldier, the King in my heart I salute
My country’s a jewel in the face of all others,
A place for which I will fight!

The light of my Country is strong in my heart,
It’s a light that will never go out. But the young
ones now don’t seem to know Just what war is all about.
Too quickly they rush to fight one another, when for
fighting they should have grave doubt.
For once in a war no matter how long or how short,
You can never, ever get out.

War eats your mind, your life and your soul, never
gives you rest without fear or doubt,
if you’ll ever, ever get out. I tell you true, you young un’s,
you can never, ever get out.

There’s no time for a beer at the pub with your mates,
they’re dead and all gone before, and whether its fair
or foul, it’s war, you can never, ever get out.

Come fight for your country the ads almost shout!
But they never tell you there’s no way out.
The war lasts forever inside your head,
and inside you scream and lash out.

They can’t understand, never will, and even
though you may get home, you’ll never, ever get out.
So before you happily go off to war, understand
and hear what I say…I say true…
That no matter how long or short that war is,
you will never, ever get out…
