The Courtesan

Her black ebony eyes peer through
magenta voile sash draped over
glistening, silky dark brown maine of hair.
Mesmerising, alluring, seductive
yet her feline like demeanour
displays the air of being elusive.

Alas, she is left a young widow
soon after the Kingdom of the Rising Sun
Bereft of love and grief stricken
she must now fend for herself
though no warning, no knowledge to counterpart
a long life of comfort and privileges.

Her husky voice assure her an unlikely place
a songstress in a dingy, cigar smoke filled bar
Soldiers of the Rising Sun her admirers
their leaders her lovers, protagonists and keepers
Though her heart aches for dearest beloved
long burried with her emotions, hopes and aspirations.

The Courtesan, all who know her agree
exotic beauty, demure demeanour her possession
One glance could melt away a general’s steely stance
A smile would send his heart racing, his libido flaring
An embrace often a prelude to a wild roller coaster ride
through a balmy night of passionate rendezvous.

Totally spent, her one night stand by her side
perspiring, no longer grunting, fully satisfied
he would part with his hard earned yens
His lady back in Sakura land waiting endlessly
patiently, while her hero cheat on her, happily
shameslessly surrendering himself to the Courtesan.

Artist's Description

A long distance call from my aunt who lives in the Netherlands brought me back to a childhood memory of conversing with this elderly widow; who was fond of recounting her glory days during the Japanese occupation in Indonesia (1942-1945).
