Life Slips Away

To see her submit
Alien to me
In life, my rock
Now resigned to fateful destiny

Incomprehensible circumstance
Yielding to fate
Staring death in the eye
Wishes contemplated too late

Suffering subsides
Morphine’s blissful sleep
Peacefully at rest
Bedside vigil I keep

Final thoughts fade
Incoherent words muttered
Unconsciousness invades mind
Life’s window irreversibly shuttered

Subsistence from body ebbs
Flesh waxy and sallow
Near meeting her maker
Remaining breaths shallow

Lamented epoch’s arrival
Beside me she lay
Her hand in mine
Life slips away

Her era concluded
Where did the years go?
Like passing of winter
Inexorable melting of snow

Time heals, eases pain
From loss we recover
Tears still these words bring
Sorely missed, dear mother

Artist's Description

It’ll be three years next week since my mum passed away.
