Artist's Description

Who you calling a spider.
I ain’t no spider, I’m a Harvestman – Opiliones (formerly Phalangida).
OK, So I’ve got 8 legs, same as a spider, making me an arachnid, I’ll give you that, but the similarities end there.
(1) My head, thorax and abdomen are fused as one big unit unlike spiders.
(2) We have only two eyes on top orientated sideways – spiders usually have 8 eyes, sometimes 6 and only rarely two.
(3) Harvestmen have no silk glands so cannot make webs.
(4) We have no venom glands (so we can’t hurt humans).
(5) We don’t have book lungs like spiders, but breathe through tracheae and spiracles like insects (although I’m an arachnid, not an insect).
(6) We can eat chunks of food, none of that sucking of juices like the spiders.
(7) And, saving the best till last, we reproduce by sexual intercouse – yes, male Harvestmen have a penis, whilst male spiders have their sex organs on the ends on their palps (feelers) and use the deposition method.
Who’d want to be a spider.
